Many car parts can be
cleaned up and resold as ‘recycled’ car parts. There are a slew of sites on the
Internet that sell recycled parts, as well as businesses in local communities
across the country that allow you to pick and buy used parts from cars. Many of
them probably come from cars that have been tossed into a junk yard. That’s not
necessarily a bad thing; most car parts from these yards are still functional
and reusable.
Your local city
government is a great resource and if your city doesn’t have its own collection
facility, chances are they know who does. There are a multitude of facilities
all across the country that accept:
- -
Tires, belts and rubber hoses
- -
Transmissions
- -
Radiators
- -
Used oil filters
Accessories like car
seats, seat covers, wheels and floor mats are often made of recyclable
materials such as steel, plastic and aluminum. While many recycling programs do
not yet exist for these specific products, there are some initiatives to
recycle and reuse these valuable parts. Here are some ways you can contribute
to these recycling efforts:
- Try to purchase accessories made from
materials that are recyclable, such as plastic or metal, or are made from
post-consumer recycled materials, such as rubber. For example, some floor mats
and tire covers include reclaimed, pressed polyurethane.
- If your accessories are in good
condition, you can donate them to a local Goodwill or sell them to a Certified
Auto Recycler.
-
You can donate used child car seats to a
local charitable organization for reuse.
